Over the years, women have exceeded the limitations that were once placed upon them. The modern woman has evolved from that of everyday housewife to full on businesswoman. In fact, most women seek to not only climb the corporate ladder in the workplace, but to also act as a wife AND mother in the process. Fashion too has undergone a complete metamorphosis to compliment this change. Rebecca Taylor's designs are a perfect fit for the daily needs of the contemporary woman. She has managed to find the proper balance between structure and femininity. Rebecca has a keen eye for detail and knows exactly what makes a woman feel beautiful. One must wonder though, what's the story behind such elegant womenswear? Who is Rebecca Taylor? Fashion Designer Rebecca Taylor was born in New Zealand on September 5th, 1969. When it comes to design, the apple didn't fall far from the tree in her household. Taylor's mother was a seamstress and she sewed both Rebecca and her sister Victoria's clothing by hand. Rebecca attended St. Catherine's College and received her initial fashion training at the Bowerman School of Design. She later studied Fashion Design at Wellington Polytechnic. She got her first taste of acting as a designer when she landed the job of creating costumes for the puppets in Peter Jackson's Meet the Feebles. Rebecca revealed that she moved to New York with only six hundred to her name after falling in love with the energy in the bustling city. Shortly thereafter, she began her six-year stint working with designer Cynthia Rowley. In the late 1990s Rebecca had the honor of presenting during as part of the Gen Art Styles competition. Taylor said that when it came to launching her own contemporary label when she was twenty-six, it was blind optimism that worked in her favor. Four years later, it was that same optimism that opened even more doors for her. She was able to present her very own catwalk show during New York Fashion Week at age thirty. Rebecca's sophisticated garments have been worn by several celebrities, including Reese Witherspoon and Kate Middleton, just to name a few. Style icons David Bowie and Debbie Harry are amongst the top names on Rebecca's list of muses. Rebecca gushed that a highlight in her career was being nominated for the Council of Fashion Designers of America Perry Ellis Awards for Emerging New Talent. Taylor has also established retail outlets in Japan.
Throughout the years, Rebecca has not forgotten her roots. While Taylor has stated that she is inspired by her everyday surroundings in New York, she also draws inspiration from her many fond memories of growing up in a seaside village in New Zealand.
